Horsemanship and Animal Care Class Combo

In this special 5 week class combined class, come to the Gilchrist Farm to learn all about horsemanship & horseback riding in one hour and all about the other animals at the farm in the next!  This 2 hour course includes one hour of horsemanship & horseback riding and one hour of animal care.

In addition to learning to ride, in the horsemanship portion of the class students will learn  safety, mounting, leading, handling, showmanship, disciplines and horse care.  This is an excellent overview for a beginner or a solid immersion for a student with experience.

In the Animal Care portion of the class, students will learn how to take care of chickens, ducks, peacocks, geese, pigs, bunnies & goats (and even get a cameo appearance from our mini mule Tika).  Each class will focus on an animal or a group of animals for a close up look and feel - feed the animals, brush the animals, gather the eggs, trim a goats nails, groom a horse, and learn what caring for animals is all about.  

Appropriate for ages 4 and up. Available as a series only for $300 total for the entire series of 5 two hour classes.  

This class is offered Mondays 10-12 AM beginning January 8, and Tuesdays 12-2PM beginning January 9.

Spring Animal Care Class-Butterflies and Chicks!

In this special 5 week class, come to the Gilchrist Farm and learn how to take care of chickens, ducks, peacocks, turkeys, pigs, goats, and horses.  Each class will focus on an animal or a group of animals for a close up look and feel - feed the animals, brush the animals, gather the eggs, milk a goat, groom a horse, and learn what caring for animals is all about.  

In this special Spring version of the class, students will be watching caterpillars transform into butterflies and will incubate/hatch chicks!  Butterfly release will take place during our Spring Fling on March 31!

Appropriate for all ages with parent. $25 per class or $115 for the series of 5.   An additional 10% discount for siblings or enrollment in multiple classes or lessons (call or email for the discount code). 

For the spring series, this class is offered Mondays 10-11 AM beginning February 26 , Tuesdays 12-1PM beginning February 27 or Wednesdays 5-6PM beginning February 28.

Class 1. All About Goats- While our goats are getting ready to have goat babies we'll trim goat hooves, do some grooming and hair trimming to prep them for the spring, spend time petting and learning about different breeds, housing, food, habits, horns and more!

Class 2. Chickens! -During this class we'll gather eggs from three pens, visit and learn about chicks and chickens and we'll put the eggs into the incubator-setting up for a hatch during week 5.  We'll peek at the eggs, check on their progress and discuss their development in subsequent classes.

Class 3. In the Garden! We'll learn about gardening and how the garden works at the farm.  Children will get to pick some weeds to feed to the animals (they'll feed the goats, bunnies, ducks, tortoise, chickens) and they will get to plant some seeds.  We'll learn about planting for butterflies and we'll get to know our caterpillars, which we'll check on weekly as they develop.  We'll learn a lot about butterflies.

Class 4. This Little Piggy...We'll get up close and personal with our pot bellied pigs and our several breeds of hogs.  We'll learn about the habits and happenings of pigs!  And bunnies.  We'll meet and greet our bunnies and learn how to take care of bunnies.

Class 5. Hatching and Morphing!  By class 5, we should have some hatching happening from the eggs we incubated.  Our butterflies will have or will be emerging!  And...baby goats should be hopping around.  We'll focus on chicks, hatching and butterflies emerging during this class.  We'll visit with the peacocks, who should be strutting their spring time best!  

Everyone who participates in this series is invited to join us on Saturday, March 31 during our Egg Hunt and Spring Fling to participate in our butterfly release at noon!  The kids will get to release the butterflies they watched transform during the class into the butterfly garden and the wild!

Summer Camp 2018!

Gilchrist Farm Summer Camp!!!

Horse care, grooming, riding and an end of the week horse show!  Learn how to groom, tack up, and ride horses or enhance your current riding expertise by trying something new.  End the week with a super fun horse show (with ribbons and prizes) for your friends and family to enjoy!

Milk goats, gather eggs, pet pigs and bunnies, feed the ducks and tortoise, enjoy the horses and take the mini mule for a walk!   Gather some fresh vegetables and fruits from the garden.   Watch eggs hatch and learn to care for chicks!  

Country Arts & Crafts galore!  Soap and candle making, leather working, rag doll making, and wood working.

GAMES!  Milk jug bowling, horse shoes, corn hole, water balloon battles, tug o war, gunny sack races, and more!

Typical schedule:

8:00 -10:00 Horse care and riding

10:00-12:00 (Snacks) Goat milking, petting zoo, egg gathering, animal care and fun with animals!

12:00-2:00 Lunch, gardening, games, arts & crafts

Camp is suitable for children age 5 and older.  All campers need to wear closed toed shoes, a sun hat, sun screen and bring a refillable water bottle and lunch.  Snacks and more drinks are provided.  The day is scheduled to limit heavy sun exposure, provide breaks, and drink plenty of water.  

Extended day care is available for $25/day until 6PM. 

SPACE is limited!  Five weeks only.  Weeks of June 25,  July 9,  July 16, July 23, and July 30.  Monday-Friday 8AM-2PM.  $275/week.  $50 Registration Fee.   Siblings enrolled in same week receive 5% discount.

Intro to Soap Making

Learn how to make your own soap for holiday gifting!  In this class, we'll make soap from goat's milk and learn about how to select ingredients, mix and match and make your own natural soap! Take home your makings...and enjoy natural soap without the extra additives and chemicals.  Soap made during class will need to be picked up two days after class, beginning on November 20.  Each participant will take 4 bars.  Geared toward adults and children 12 and over (some mature children can participate with a parent).
